When is Rath Yatra celebrated in the year?

Rath means a Chariot thus the term "Rath Yatra" refers, to the Chariot festival. It is celebrated annually in the month of Ashadha in the Hindu calendar and in July, in the Gregorian calendar. The auspicious day falls on 'Aashadh Shukla Paksha Dwitiya' every year.

Rath Yatra in Orissa

History

The literal meaning of Rath Yatra is, 'Travelling on Chariot'. On this festival, a huge possession is taken out with a well-decorated Chariot in which, lord Jagannath is seated along with his siblings 'Elder brother Balbhadra or Balram, and younger sister Subhadra'.

The holy and huge Chariot is pulled by many devotees. According to history, lord Jagannath who is the incarnation of Lord Krishna, went to his aunt's house with his siblings.

Although the Rath Yatra is observed everywhere in India, the Rath Yatra in Orissa is famous across the world, as Odisha is said to be the land of Jagannath.

The Rath Yatra in Orissa is unique because there are not one but three, giant and well-decorated chariots pulled by millions of devotees. Lord Jagannath and his siblings are seated separately on these chariots. The Chariot is carried to his aunt's house( Gundicha temple) which is situated at a 3 km distance from the Jagannath temple.
