The Legend
There are two legends of Pradosh Vrat (Trayodashi Vrat) are famous in the Hindu scriptures. One of which is about Devas who were running away from the fear of the Demons (Datyas and Danavas) and reached Mahadev's abode Kailash. According to the Legend, the time of arriving Devas on the Kailash was pradosh kal. the auspicious time of sunset where Nandi Lord Shiva's Ox protected them from Asuras and Lord Shiva helped Nandi to kill the Asuras. Hence, the auspicious time of pradosh Kal was selected to worship Lord shiva and Nandi to express gratitude towards them.
And the second legend of Pradosh Vrata is associated with the great divine event the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean). During the Samudra Manthan, along with many precious thing, a very deadly poison called Halahal also emerged. Lord Shiva drank all the poison to protect the universe and suffering with great pain, his throat turned blue, then Goddess Parvati entervened to feel him relief.
From that time, the Pradosh vrat was started by the Devtas and Asuras to express gratitude towards Lord Shiva.
