Why the month of Shravan is considered auspicious?
The month of Shravan falls in the rainy season between July- August. The rainy season is called the life-giving season because the rainwater gives new life to all living beings, trees, and plants. Thus the importance of the Saawan month increases as it falls in this season. In addition, this month is also auspicious because many fast festivals occur in this month in which Raksha Bandhan and Krishna Janmashtami are the major festivals that are celebrated in this month.
Why only Lord Shiva is worshipped in the month of Shravan?
Why does the month of Shravan is also known as the month of Lord Shiva?
There is a legend behind it. According to the mythology, at the time of Samudra-Manthan or Ocean Charning, a number of things came out to the surface which there were precious and valuable as well as some undesirable items which were harmful to the Earth. One such thing was "Halahal" the deadly poison.
The whole universe became in danger. Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu became worried and went to Lord Shiva for seeking a solution to that severe problem as only Lord Shiva was capable to bear that terrible poison. He consumed the whole poison and saved the universe from destruction.
His body became blue after consuming the Halal. His wife Goddess Parvati became worried and lastly entered into the throat of lord shiva and stopped the Halahal from spreading in the body.
Lord Shiv got a new name after this incident "Neel Kanth". Therefore, Lord Shiv is worshipped in the whole month of Shravan so that his blessing remains sustained in our lives and keeps us from every difficulty. That's why the month is marked as the month of Lord Shiva.
