The importance of Durga Puja
Durga Puja is one of the major festivals of Hinduism. It is celebrated between the month of September and October every year. The festival of Durga Puja is the symbol of victory of good over evil because Maa (Goddess Durga) was equipped by the Gods to kill the demon King Mahishasur and she got the victory over Mahishasur or buffalo demon by killing him.
Although, Durga Puja is a major festival in West Bengal many other states like Assam, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, etc. celebrate this festival with great pomp and zill. Somewhere it is called Dussehra, somewhere it is called, Navratra, and somewhere Durga Puja as well. But despite all, one thing is common Devi Durga is worshipped for 9 days during this festival, and on the 10th day, she is being Visarjan.
The legend
Mahishasur was a powerful demon king. He started to meditate and worship Lord Brahma to get more power. Then he was boon by Brahma that no God would kill him except a lady.
Mahisasur became over-confident that no God would kill him. His Tyranny on the Gods started increasing day by day. He started dreaming of the Throne Of Heaven and started thinking to defeat the King of Gods 'Indra'.
All gods became insecure, then they all went to Lord Brahma and Vishnu to take out a solution to this problem. Lord Brahma said that he can be killed only by a woman. Therefore, all gods suggest making Devi Parvati more and more powerful as he can't be killed by a common woman. So all gods gave their power and special weapon to Devi Parvati. She became a goddess with 10 hands, and every hand was endowed with powerful weapons. She was given a new name "Durga". Now she became ready for the war with Mahishasur.
Devi Durga was excessively beautiful. So when Mahishasur saw her, he was facinated by her beauty and wished to marry her. But goddess Durga challenged him to war.
Mahishasur was arrogant that when a deity cannot kill him that what will a woman kill him? So he accepted her challenge. A severe war occurred between them. Devi Durga seemed weaker than him at fast but when she got the Trishul from her husband Shiv she became able to kill him.
The auspicious day when she killed him is celebrated as "Mahalaya". Because the day reminds us that the truth, courage, and goodness always become conquest, and untruth, badness, and evil are always defeated.
What is the Legend of Vijayadashami? Why does Ravana's effigy is burnt every year on Vijaya Dashami?
There is one more Legend famous about Vijayadashami. It is said that Vijay Dashami is the day when lord Ram killed the demon King Ravana, and freed his wife Devi Sita from the clutches of the devil Ravana.
That's why the effigy of Ravana is burnt every year on Vijayadashami and showed the victory of good over evil.
In this way, this festival is important for all mankind.
