When is Apara Ekadashi celebrated, and what day is it in 2025?

Apara Ekadashi is celebrated in the month of May in the Gregorian calendar, and in the lunar calendar, it occurs on the 11th day of the Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight) of the Jyeshtha month.

In 2025, the Apara Ekadashi will be observed on the 23rd of May, i.e. Friday.
The Muhurat:
The Apara Ekadashi Tithi starts on the 1:15 a.m. in the 23rd of May, and ends on 11:30 p.m. in the 23rd of May. The Ekadashi fast will be observed on the 23rd of May i. e. Friday after sunrise.
The Parana will be observed in the next day (Dwadashi day) morning on 7:20 p.m.
The significance of Apara Ekadashi
Apara Ekadashi is also known as "Achala" Ekadashi. The word "Apara" came from the sanskrit word "apar" which means limitless.
The day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Devotees observe a fast on this day from Sunrise to the next (Dwadashi) Sunrise. Apara Ekadashi fast is considered to bring Joy, happiness, and prosperity. It also grands liberation from sins.
The day is start by taking a holy bath in the early morning, bathing in a river or a pond is considered fruitful, if this is not possible then people also take a bath at home then after that, sun god is offered water. Tulsi Pujan also is a must on this day but before that Lord Vishnu or Krishna (the eighth incarceration of Lord Vishnu) is worshipped with flowers and Tulsi leaves. Fruits and kheer are also offered to Lord Vishnu by adding Tulsi leaves in them.
Bhajans and Aarti of Lord Vishnu or Krishna are also sung. Many devotees also used to visit temples on this day. In such a way the Ekadashi day is observed.
The Legend
According to the legend of the Apara Ekadashi, this fast dates back to the time when a king named Mahidhwaj ruled upon his Kingdom.
One day he was brutally killed by his brother and his soul kept wandering for years for Liberation. A sage named Doumya intervened when he knew all these matter. He observed the fast of Apara Ekadashi and donate its merit to the ghost.
Eventually, the wandering ghost got Liberation and a transcendental body.
Thus the legend, highlights the power of devotion and beliefs of the Apara Ekadashi Vrat.
