This is the day when the first Guru came into existence. The day is also known as 'Vyas Purnima' as the spiritual Guru of Hindus (Veda Vyasa) was born on this day, who was the author of The Great Epic Mahabharat and compiled the four Vedas (Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajurveda, and Atharva Veda).
The celebration
The day is dedicated to all spiritual and academic Gurus (teachers). The Shishyas (students) worship or bow to their Gurus and offer gifts on this day. In Hinduism, Gurus have been given the status of God, so disrespecting them in any way is considered a sin. Therefore, from the very beginning children are taught by their parents that Guru is like God, so always do and respect them.
The day of Guru Purnima is observed by doing the ritual 'Guru Puja' in which, Shishyas thank their teachers, bow their heads on the feet of Gurus, take blessings, and learn the key lessons of life journey.
The significance
The day is the most significant because the great spiritual guru Veda Vyasa was born on this day. That's why, the day is also called Asadha Poornima, Vyasa Purnima, and Veda Vyasa Jayanti.
Veda Vyasa is known as the first Guru of Hindus. The day of Guru Purnima became more significant as the divine month of Sawan starts from the next day.
