Celebration
Though it is a festival of brothers and sisters, girls tie Rakhi on the wrist of their sisters, best friends, sisters-in-law, and Grandma to express inner love and affection.
Sisters arrange and decorate a Thali (plate) and place a Diya, Sweets, Rakhi, Akshat (holy rice), and Kumkum on the plate.
Sisters apply Kumkum on the forehead of their brothers, sprinkle Akshat on the head, do Aarti, and tie Rakhi then at the end feed sweets. Brother give gifts to their sisters. In such a way Raksha Bandhan is celebrated.
Raksha Bandhan holds great significance in Hindu mythology. There are many legends associated with this festival. One such legend is from the great Hindu Epic "Mahabharata".
It is said, that lord Krishna got a cut on his finger by "Sudarshan Chakra", Seeing Draupadi rush past him tear out her Dupatta, and bandage his finger, Lord Krishna promised her that he would protect her long life.
Since that time, sisters tie Rakhi on their brother's wrist and brothers promise to protect their sisters life long.
This is how the festival of Raksha Bandhan started.
