Baisakhi is a harvesting festival in Punjab and is also observed as "Pehla Boishakh" in West Bengal. Baisakhi word has been derived from the word Vaishakh which is the name of the first month of the lunar calendar. Baisakhi is observed annually on the 13th or 14th of April in Gregorian Calendar. Pahela Boishakh is also celebrated on the same day in West Bengal.

Basakhi Celebration and significance in Punjab

The festival of Baisakhi is celebrated in both states in their own way. In Punjab, it is celebrated on the occasion of spring harvesting and as a new year. Apart from this, the respective day is also coaxed as the Khalsa Panth day. 

Gurudwaras are decorated with lights and candles. Prayers and bhajans are also held there. Sikh people go to Gurdwara for praying. Lungers (Community Meals) are organized by the Gurdwara community members. Processions are also taken out with Nishan or flag.

Pahela Boishakh celebration and significance in West Bengal 

In West Bengal, it is celebrated differently as Pahela Boishakh, Pahela (first), and Boisakh (the first month of the lunar calendar), Thus it is observed as the first day of the new year.

West Bengal is called the state of sweets, that's why there is no such festival that is celebrated without sweets there. So the exchange of sweets in Pahela Boishkh is a common thing there. Apart from this, there is a custom in West Bengal to buy new clothes on the Pahela Boisakh.

There is a crowd that can be seen in the garments shops before Pahela Boishakh as the same Durga Puja. People go to visit temples by wearing new clothes with their family. There is an official holiday is declared on this day. People spend the day with families and have lunch and dinner outside. Some people held Pooja at home.

Thus Baisakhi and Pahela Boisakh is celebrated in West Bengal and Punjab.
