Who are Rahu and Ketu In The Hindu Mythology what is Their Astrological Significance, and Spiritual Impact?

By Subhalakshmi's Sanatan World

Rahu and Ketu are among the most mysterious and powerful entities in Sanatan Dharma and Vedic Astrology. Unlike other planets, Rahu and Ketu are not physical celestial bodies; they are shadow planets (Chhaya Grahas). Despite this, their influence on human life, karma, destiny, and spiritual growth is considered extremely strong.

In astrology, Rahu represents material desires, illusions, ambition, and sudden success, while Ketu signifies detachment, spirituality, past-life karma, and liberation. Together, Rahu and Ketu form a karmic axis that governs the journey of the soul.

Who Are Rahu and Ketu?

Rahu and Ketu are known as Navagrahas and are always positioned 180 degrees apart in a horoscope. They move in retrograde motion and change zodiac signs approximately every 18 months, bringing major life changes.

Rahu: The head of the demon

Ketu: The tail of the demon

They are inseparable and always influence life together.

Mythological Origin of Rahu and Ketu

The story of Rahu and Ketu originates from the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean) mentioned in the Vishnu Purana, Bhagavata Purana, and Mahabharata.

When the Devas and Asuras churned the ocean to obtain Amrit (nectar of immortality), Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini to distribute it among the Devas. An Asura named Swarbhanu disguised himself and sat between the Sun (Surya) and the Moon (Chandra) to drink the nectar.

Mythological depiction of Rahu and Ketu from Samudra Manthan

Surya and Chandra recognized him and informed Lord Vishnu. Vishnu immediately cut Swarbhanu into two parts with his Sudarshan Chakra.

The head, which had consumed Amrit, became Rahu

The body/tail, which also retained immortality, became Ketu

Since then, Rahu and Ketu are believed to cause solar and lunar eclipses as they seek revenge on the Sun and Moon.
