It is a time to show respect to one’s tools of trade, to pray for safety, success and prosperity, and to remember the sacred link between creativity and labour.

In 2025, Vishwakarma Puja will be observed on Wednesday, 17 September. 

This date corresponds with Kanya Sankranti or Bhadra Sankranti, which is the solar transit of the Sun into Virgo, and also marks the last day of the Bengali month of Bhadra. 

Who is Lord Vishwakarma?

Lord Vishwakarma is regarded in Hindu scriptures as the divine architect, engineer, and craftsman of the gods. Among many mythological attributions:

He is said to have built Dwarka for Lord Krishna, the city of Indraprastha for the Pandavas. 

He fashioned many of the gods’ weapons and divine instruments, including the Sudarshana Chakra of Vishnu, the Trident (Trishula) of Shiva, etc. 

He is also credited with Sthapatya Veda (architecture and mechanical arts), symbolising craftsmanship, design, the art of making tools and structures. 

Thus, his worship is especially important among those whose work involves creativity, construction, engineering, manufacturing, metal-working, architecture, etc.

Significance of the Day

Honouring Labour & Craftsmanship: It’s a recognition of human labour, skill, craft, and innovation. Tools and machines are not just means; they are respected as accompaniments of one’s livelihood. 

Prayers for Safety & Prosperity: Worshippers seek protection, safety, smooth operations of machinery, health of workers, and flourishing of their work. 

Cultural Identity & Community: Among communities of craftsmen (such as carpenters, blacksmiths, jewellers, mechanics, etc.), the festival helps reinforce identity, shared traditions and mutual help. 

Rituals and Customs

The observance of Vishwakarma Puja combines ritual, symbolic gesture, social gathering, and often industrial-scale worship in factories. Key customs include:

1. Cleaning and Decoration of Workspaces

Tools, machines, workshops, factories, garages, and the like are cleaned, polished, painted or decorated. Offerings of flowers, garlands, rangoli, turmeric/kumkuma are common. 

2. Worship of Tools and Machinery

Tools, machines, implements of trade are placed at a shrine or an altar. They are worshipped as symbols of work and livelihood. Machines may be halted for the day or part of the day. 

3. Puja of Lord Vishwakarma

An image or idol of Lord Vishwakarma is set up. Flowers, incense, fruits, sweets (prasada), and other offerings are made. Mantras and hymns are chanted. 

4. Community Feasting / Distribution of Prasada

After the rituals, there is often a communal meal or sharing of food, sweets among workers, families, and community. 

5. Restraint or Rest from Use of Tools

In many places, workers refrain from using tools or machinery on this day, or at least until the puja is completed, as a mark of reverence. 

Regional Variations

While the core theme is similar everywhere, different regions observe Vishwakarma Puja with distinctive touches:

In West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Tripura, the festival is very popular among industrial workers, artisans, and often celebrated in large scale in factories and communities. It is sometimes called Biswakarma Puja in Bengal. 

In northern states like Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan etc., it is a restricted holiday; in some places people give time off to workers in factories or workshops. 

In Bihar and parts of eastern India, beyond the big industrial areas, smaller workshops, farming tool users, mechanics, etc., participate with local customs. 

Also, the timing (muhurat) may differ slightly based on local calendars and the position of the sun; often the worship is aligned with a Sankranti, meaning a solar transition (here, into Virgo / Kanya).

In our modern times, Vishwakarma Puja is more than just a religious festival:

It reminds us of the dignity of work, the importance of tools, and that human effort and craft still matter in an increasingly automated world.

It’s a day when industries pause, even if briefly, to reflect on safety, innovation, ethics, and the welfare of workers.

It can also serve as a morale boost — a shared ritual that brings together coworkers, artisans, communities.

For craftsmen and small-scale workers, it is a psychological affirmation: their work is seen, respected, and blessed.
