The festival usually lasts for 10 days, beginning with the installation of beautifully crafted idols of Lord Ganesha in homes and public pandals. Devotees perform daily prayers, sing devotional songs, and offer special sweets, especially Modak, which are considered Lord Ganesha’s favorite. The atmosphere is filled with joy, music, and devotion. Cultural programs, charitable activities, and community feasts are also organized. On the last day, the idol is immersed in rivers, lakes, or the sea during the grand procession known as Ganesh Visarjan, symbolizing the cycle of creation and dissolution. Significance & Celebration

Ganesh Chaturthi commemorates the divine birth of Lord Ganesha, widely revered as the remover of obstacles, patron of wisdom, intellect, and new beginnings . The festival is celebrated with great devotion—idols are installed at homes and community pandals, followed by prayers, bhajans, offerings (especially modak, Ganesha’s favorite sweet), and cultural events before culminating in the immersion of the idol (Visarjan).

Many states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Telangana treat it as a public holiday, although it remains optional at the national level .

The Legend 

According to legend, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste to guard her while she bathed. She instructed him not to let anyone enter. When Lord Shiva, her husband, returned, Ganesha, unaware of who he was, stopped him. Angered, Shiva cut off the boy’s head in battle.

When Parvati saw this, she was heartbroken and furious. To console her, Shiva promised to bring Ganesha back to life. He ordered his followers to bring the head of the first living creature they found facing north. They returned with the head of a strong elephant, which Shiva placed on Ganesha’s body, reviving him. Shiva declared Ganesha as his son and gave him the status of being worshipped before all gods and at the beginning of every auspicious work.

Thus, Ganesh Chaturthi marks the day of Ganesha’s birth and his acceptance as the Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles). Devotees celebrate this day with devotion, offering prayers, sweets like modaks, and installing idols of Ganesha, seeking his blessings for wisdom, prosperity, and a smooth life journey.
