Ganga river is worshipped as goddess Ganga in Hindu mythology. Ganga Dusshera is celebrated to honour the descent of the Holy river Ganga from heaven to earth.
Ganga Dussehra is also known as 'Gangavtaran' which means the landing or incarnation of the Goddess Ganga on Earth.
This festival is celebrated annually on Dasami (the 10th day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) of the Jyeshtha month.
In 2025, it is celebrated on this 5th of June i.e.Thursday.
Celebrations
Ganga Dusshera is celebrated in the states where the river flows like, Bihar, West Bengal, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Alahabad, Patna, etc. People gether in a large scale in the back of the rivers. They take a holy bath and do worship and Aarti of goddess Ganga. Some other rituals are also performed like, Mundan (Tonsure), Janeu Sanskar (sacred thread ceremony), Tarpan, etc. Donation is also a crucial part of this day. It is believed that donating essential things to the needy on this auspicious day, remove sins, financial crisis, health issues, troubles and other problems.
It is believed that by taking a dip in the Ganga River on this auspicious day, all the sins of life are washed away, even the sins of the previous life are also removed and a person attain salvation.
