Mahashivratri legend and significance
Mahashivratri is the day of Union of Shiva and Shakti (Lord shiva and Goddess Parvati). According to the Hindu scriptures, after the self immolation of goddess Sati, Lord Shiva became detached from the world and became nostalgic and was leading an ascetic life. Seeing this, all the Gods and goddess became worried because without him the whole universe had become orphan. Then only one thought was coming in everyone's mind-Lord Shiva's second marriage with Goddess Parvati. Goddess Parvati was actually the reincarnation of goddess Sati, but this was impossible as Lord Shiv was immersed in meditation with his eyes closed and he had no interest in worldly matter then all the Gods and goddess took the help of kamdev who was the god of love and feelings.
When Lord Shiva was engrossed in meditation, God kamdev shot the arrow of love and feelings towards him. Lord Shiva became very angry and opened his third eye and burnt Kaamdev to ashes. Then goddess Parvati started doing severe penance for Lord Shiva.
