Kumbh Mela History
Kumbh Mela is rooted in the history of "Samudra Manthan", the churning of the Ocean which was occurred between Gods and Demons for the creation of the Amrit (nectar or immobility). This event has been an important chapter of the Puranas and scriptures and also other religious texts from the ancient times.
"Kumbh" means pitcher or Ghada. The term Kumbh came from the pot that was obtained as the pot of Nectar after the Samudra Manthan. The Samudra Manthan is said to be continued for 12 days. According to the scriptures, one year on Earth is equal to one day in heaven hence Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years.
What is the significance of the four places of Kumbh Mela?
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Lakshmi appeared during the churning of the ocean with a full pot of nectar. When she was passing with the Ghada, four drops of nectar spilled from the Ghada into the rivers of the four places hence the Kumbh Snan or taking a dip into those specific rivers during Kumbh Mela is believed to wash away all the sins of the past.
